Hans J. Kanty
"Sangschlag" - solo for voice and drums

Thanks to his creative work in the field of theatre and modern improvised music the expressive drummer and experimentor with sounds, Hans J. Kanty, has become an essential part of the music scene.

Apart from many other projects he presents his SOLO-ZYKLUS-SANG-SCHLAG at home and abroad. SOLO-SANGSCHLAG is Kanty's very own mixture of percussion, noises and voice. It is a piece of music theatre which takes the listener to the very boundaries of music's limits while sometimes using an absolute minimum of equipment. Apart from conventional instruments and his voice, household appliances, toys and even food begin to vibrate, pulsate and sound. In his sometimes very funny and often stunning way Kanty gives a virtuoso performance using most simple means.

WAZ - Gregor Willmes on SANGSCHLAG

Kanty is brilliant at making music out of noises. Back in the sixties John Cage made objects of everyday life part of contemporary music. Kanty has joined this tradition. His creativity allows him to add even new dimensions to it. The plastic woodpecker that taps on the drum is a part of this programme just as the drum set or his voice which he uses as an instrument in songs without lyrics. "Wandlungen" (Changes), the first piece in Kanty's cycle SANGSCHLAG is dominated by it`s rhythm. A simple rhythm is presented extensively as in an incantation. Gradually, the structure becomes more intricate, the rhythm more complex and the basic rhythm goes on sounding in the auditor's ear long after Kanty has stopped playing it. His piece "Construction and Destruction" is dominated by noises. Kanty makes air bubble in a bucket of water, or he creates fascinating sounds using the bow of a double-bass on a cymbal. The way he does this sometimes reminds us of Mauricio Kagel's "New Music Theatre".
